Come to Brentwood Branch Block Party August 29
Neighborhoods and libraries make great partners, and nowhere is that more evident than the blocks surrounding the Brentwood Branch Library just off Glenstone Avenue, at 2214 Brentwood Blvd.
The branch has served southeast Springfield since 1971, cultivating a loyal base of new, young families as well as long-time neighbors.
Brentwood’s customers are voracious readers, too. They support the branch at a level that rivals the two destination libraries – Library Center and Library Station – in terms of circulation; with a smaller facility, fewer hours of operation and a smaller collection of books and other materials.
Today, Sunday, Aug. 29, staff invites everyone to celebrate its long relationship with the community during the Brentwood Branch 3rd Annual Block Party from 2-4 p.m. on the library grounds.
Bring your lawn chair and relax to the bluegrass sounds of Wires and Wood, and enjoy snacks and beverages provided by Uncle Lloyd’s Cookie Company and the Mudhouse. The Friends of the Library also plans a mini-book sale, and there will be games and prizes for kids, Leo the Library Lion mascot, Pluggy the robot from the American Red Cross and a fire truck from Springfield Fire Department Station No. 7.
All the activities are free and open to the public – you don’t have to live in the neighborhood, but you might want to after the block party.

Researchers are in for a treat. Thanks to a $7,983 grant through the Library Services and Technology Act, the Library Center’s Local History and Genealogy Department will soon purchase a digital film viewer/scanner and a companion multi-media scanner.
The equipment offers the newest technology for improving access to local history materials in a variety of formats. It will also allow us to digitize in-house or others’ collections currently on microfilm, and share microfilm images via e-mail.
