Parkview Concert Band Record
The Parkview concert band recorded an album to raise money to travel to the New York World's Fair in 1964-1965. The songs included on the album are The Foundation March, First Suite for Military Band, Blue Bells of Scotland, A Swingin Safari, Ben-Hur Overture, How the West was Won, Folk Song Overture, and the Stars and Stripes Forever. The 1965 Parkview Viking Log yearbook states "At the request of Governor Warren E. Hearnes, the band will represent its school and state at the New York World's Fair on Missouri Day". The following appears on the album cover:
"Missouri's official representative to the World's Fair - Dan Palen, Conductor
"The purpose of this album is to make this fine music available so that it may be enjoyed by a greater number of people. The citizens of Springfield are justifiably proud of the excellent opportunities afforded them to hear and enjoy good music in their community. Much of this music is provided by the talented performances of local artists. Many of these fine musicians are the product of the excellent musical instruction made available by the music department of the Springfield Public Schools.
"The Springfield World's Fair Band is typical of the many fine musical organizations of the Springfield Public School System. Because of the excellent qualities of the Parkview High School Band, there is every reason to feel confident that this group will bring credit to the school system, the city of Springfield and to the State of Missouri when they perform at the New York World's Fair as the Official Missouri Band on "Missouri Day" at the Missouri Pavilion on August 27, 1965.
"It is with humility but understandable pride that the Springfield World's Fair Band prepares for their journey to New York. The bandsmen are ever aware of the honor and responsibility place upon them when Governor Warren E. Hearnes, with the encouragement of United States Senator Stuart Symington, saw fit to invite this group to perform four times and represent the State of Missouri at the New York World's Fair. They are working diligently, under the supervision of director, Dan Palen, to be ready to show New York and the world what the official band from the "Show Me State" can do!
"The educational opportunities this trip will afford are invaluable. In addition to seeing the World's Fair, a day will be spent touring New York City. Sights may include Statue of Liberty, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, 5th Avenue, Broadway, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center and United Nations Building.
"On the return trip through Philadelphia visits may be made to the many historical places including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, Franklin Institute, Carpenters Hall, Old Custom house and Washington Square.
"Another day will be spent in Washington, D.C. where the students will have an opportunity to visit famous historical sites such as the Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson monuments, Arlington Cemetery, Smithsonian Institute, Pentagon and all other government buildings.
"The total profit of this record sale will go directly toward expenses of the band trip. It will be an unforgettable experience for the members."
