Show the Value of Your Library on Library Snapshot Day

More than 1.9 million people visited the Springfield-Greene County Libraries last year, and checked out more than 3.9 million books, movies and music. Nearly 119,000 people attended programs at the libraries that year, and our free, professional computer training classes drew 6,000 registrations.

What would Greene County communities be like without “The Library” – the system of 10 branches and bookmobile? Where would people go for free use of high-speed Internet computers, escape a homebound illness or blindness with home delivery of books and audiobooks, or come to a free concert?

You get the picture.

Now we’d like to capture that picture in one day, Tuesday, Sept. 21.

We’re calling it Library Snapshot Day: Show-Me Your Library.

All day in each branch, on the bookmobile and at our outreach programs in the community, we’ll be taking photos and video, collecting statistics about numbers of people who visit and what they’re doing.

We’re inviting you to be a part of the picture on Tuesday by visiting a library, attending a program, writing a comment about your experience at the library, posting a photo of yourself or family at the library or commenting about the impact the library has on your life on Facebook.com/snapshotday. And enter our photo contest with snapshots you take that day at a library and post them to the Facebook page.

When we compile results, we plan to show our customers, stakeholders and public officials the value of libraries – their “third place” for comfort, learning and fun at a library.

As one example that night, the Library Center will feature The Hero Squad at 7 p.m. in the auditorium in a zany program, “Be a Stand-up Comedian with The Hero Squad.” The group will share tips on how to be the next “Last Comic Standing.” These guys have opened for comedy acts and have been showcased locally at the Skinny Improv.

Library Snapshot Day began in 2009 in New Jersey. Since then more than 250 libraries have participated, creating a powerful picture of how life is full because libraries exist.

We hope you’ll visit us in person, shoot me an e-mail or post a comment on Facebook on Tuesday.
