Friends of the Library Named Outstanding Philanthropic Organization of the Year
The Friends of the Library, volunteer supporters of the Springfield-Greene County Library District, was named 2010 “Outstanding Philanthropic Organization of the Year” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Ozarks Region.
The Friends group was one of seven organizations or individuals honored for their philanthropic work. They will be honored at a luncheon at Highland Springs Country Club on Nov. 19, 2010, National Philanthropy Day.
In announcing the awards, the Ozarks Region chapter issued this statement: “In professional fundraising, such individuals and organizations form a vital partnership that philanthropy must have to maintain its contribution to mankind. It is right and proper, therefore, that AFP honors those who hold high ethical standards and best exemplify commitment, dedication and talent toward helping society.”
Since 1979, the Friends of the Library have contributed to the success of the Springfield-Greene County Library District in providing grant funds for programs, equipment and furniture for all of its 10 branches.
The Friends’ major fundraising events are the successful annual spring and fall book sales. The spring book sale in 2010 sold $104,237 in books and materials, and the combined book sales in 2009 sold more than $211,493.
A strong interest in community literacy is evident in their financial support of summer reading programs for teens and children, and in the Wee Read program, which provides books for preschoolers, delivered through Parents as Teachers program.
And in August, in its largest gift ever to the library district, the Friends gave $267,000 to buy a new bookmobile and to revitalize the Ash Grove Branch Library.
“This award is the culmination of the day-to-day hard work in sorting and organizing the upcoming book sales,” said Gay Wilson, planning and development librarian.
Executive Director Regina Greer Cooper added, “This is one of the most dedicated groups that I’ve ever been associated with.”
