College Test Preparation
These resources can help you and your child be better prepared for college admission tests, including the ACT, SAT, PSAT, PLAN, and COMPASS.
The ACT is a national college admissions test which assesses English, mathematics, reading, and science. Colleges and universities in Missouri predominantly accept this admissions test.
Test Dates
- December 11, registration deadline is November 5
- February 12, registration deadline is January 7
- April 9, registration deadline is March 4
- June 11, registration deadline is May 6
Grade Level: typically junior or senior
Test Centers are located in nearly all Greene County high schools.
Fees: $33.00. This will allow you to select up to 4 colleges to send the scores.

The SAT is a national college admissions test which assesses critical reading, math problem solving, and writing. The significant difference between the ACT and SAT is there are student produced responses and a required writing section on the SAT.
Test Dates
- December 4, registration deadline is November 5
- January 22, registration deadline is December 23
- March 12, registration deadline is February 11
- April 7, registration deadline is March 8
- May 7, registration deadline is April 8
- June 4, registration deadlines is May6
Grade Level: typically junior or senior
Missouri State University is the closest Test Center for taking the SAT.
Fees: $47.00.
What’s on the SAT? This includes a description of the components including timing allowances and sample problems.

This exam (a pre-ACT test) helps students build a solid foundation regarding academic success and planning, as well as being a good predictor for the future performance on the ACT exam. This exam is administered at the high school, typically by the guidance counselor.
Grade Level: sophomores
Dates: chosen by each high school, typically in the fall
Fees: $10, approximately (established by school)
What’s on the test? Includes a breakdown of the components of the test, including timing allowances, quantity of questions, and details about the non-testing section. Included in the administration of the PLAN is a Needs Assessment, which can detail areas where the student needs help to be prepared for the ACT and college preparation.
This test is a course placement test offered by area colleges, specifically Ozarks Technical Community College. Students who are planning to attend OTC are not necessarily required to take the ACT or SAT to be admitted. By taking the COMPASS, colleges place students in the right level of courses for math, composition, and reading. Currently, this test is offered through OTC at no cost to future students.
