Find Book Bargains at Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Oct. 19-24

The days are getting chilly – perfect weather to sink into a comfy chair with a steaming drink and a riveting book to read. If that sounds like your kind of fall entertainment, we’ve got the books. Lots of books; somewhere in the neighborhood of three tractor-trailer loads.

Yes – it’s time for the giant Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale.

The Friends event runs Tuesday, October 19, through Sunday, October 24 at Remington’s 1655 W. Republic Road in Springfield.

Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, October 19 through October 23, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, October 24.

The Friends Night preview sale is 5-8 p.m. Monday, October 18. Friends members should make sure their dues are paid in advance.

Look for 250 tables full of books, CDs, DVDs and other materials in a variety of genres for children, teens and adults, says Friends sale co-chair Jim Moore.

The event is possible thanks to donations through the year of items from area residents, book store closeouts and library stacks.

It’s a great way to pick up bargains to keep or give as gifts. Children’s books are priced 50 cents or less, adult and young adult books are $1 or less, most audiovisual materials are $1, and better books are individually priced.

And the great benefit – the proceeds go back to you, library customers, in the form of programs and comfortable spaces at the 10 branches in the library district. Among other things, the Friends fund summer reading programs, early literacy projects, live music programs and branch furnishings. This summer, the Friends also announced a $267,000 gift to buy a new bookmobile and revitalize the Ash Grove Branch Library.

So we were pleased recently, but not surprised when the Friends of the Library was named 2010 “Outstanding Philanthropic Organization of the Year” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Ozarks Region.

These are the very folks who, all year, every year, box all those donated books at each branch, sort, price and box them again for the big sales in spring and fall. We invite you to save the book sale dates – Oct. 19-24 – pick up some great reads and meet some great Friends.
