15% Ethanol Blend (E15) Approved by EPA
On October 13, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency approved an increase in the amount of ethanol which may be blended with gasoline for cars and light-duty trucks of model year 2007 and newer. The approval came as a waiver of the old 10 percent ethanol limit (E10) and established a new limit of 15 percent ethanol (E15).
The EPA is continuing to study the effects of E15 on 2001-2006 vehicles as well as on heavier trucks, motorcycles, and other types of vehicles. At this time, E15 is not approved for these vehicles. E10 and E15 should not be confused with E85 (85% ethanol) which can only be used in special flex-fuel vehicles.
E15 will not be available at retail stations until the EPA sets rules, such as proper labeling, to ensure it is only used in approved vehicles. More information about E15 in general and the Waiver of the 10% limit can be found at the EPA's website, www.epa.gov.
