'Holiday Open House' and Santa Kick Off Annual 'Holiday Store' for Kids at Library Center and Library Station
The tough economy hits kids, too, especially when they want to buy Christmas gifts for Mom, Dad, best friends and teachers.
So mark this on your calendar: The annual, affordable kids’ Holiday Store sponsored by the Between Friends gift shops of the Springfield-Greene County Library District opens on Saturday, Nov. 27 at both the Library Center and the Library Station.
What’s special is that the “stores” are filled with great gifts for all ages, all members of the family, at kid-friendly prices of 25 cents to $5.
Friends of the Library and staff volunteers help the children shop for everyone on their gift list, help them budget what’s in their pocketbook, and help them wrap and tag their gifts. Meanwhile Mom, Dad or family members can visit the library, shop at the Between Friends gift shop at either branch, or grab a snack at the café.
This is the seventh year for the Holiday Store, and Between Friends gift shop Manager Shelli Kaminski says it grows every year as families make the event a holiday tradition. Last year’s sales saw a 45 percent increase over the previous year, she said.
What’s nice is that the proceeds go back to kids. They support the popular children’s Summer Reading Program that all kids can participate in throughout the district.
What you need to know: Opening day of the store, Nov. 27, kicks off in the morning with the annual Holiday Open House and a “Polar Express” theme, with games for kids, crafts, drawings, cookies, hot chocolate and candy canes, and photographs with Santa and Mrs. Claus. It’s a great way to usher in the holiday season.
The Holiday Open House on Nov. 27 runs from 8:30-10 a.m. at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave., and from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Library Station, 2535 N. Kansas Expressway.
Shopping at the Holiday Store continues after that:
- Library Center: 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27; then 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, Nov. 29-Dec. 4; and 1-4:30 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 28 and Dec. 5.
- Library Station: Saturday, Nov. 27, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 28, 1-4:30 p.m.
