Test Success!

Below are some helpful and effective study skill tips that can help a student do his or her best on those big tests.

Be well-rested - Concentration skills and retainment skills are opportune when you are well-rested. Therefore, it is important to get a good night's sleep prior to an extensive study session. It is equally important to get a good night's sleep before a final exam.

Use effective time management skills - It is important to prioritize your study skills tasks and set study goals. Create a deadline to complete your goals. This will help develop self-discipline and avoid procrastination.

Select a non-distracting study environment - Choosing a productive study environment is as important as the study skills that you employ. A quiet, non-distracting environment is often best. Libraries, study lounges or quiet rooms are recommended.

Effectively take notes - Invest in a good notebook and take notes logically and legibly. If you are unable to read your own handwriting, the notes will be of little use. If possible, taking and saving notes electronically (via a netbook or laptop) is an excellent way to retrieve and retain information.

Outlining textbooks or lecture notes - One technique that has proven effective is outlining the textbook and/or lecture notes. Using a highlighter to highlight passages within the outline is also another effective study skill.

These are only recommended study skill strategies. It is always best to employ the skill or strategy that works best for the individual student.
