Check out e-materials for free from the Library

Do you hope to receive an e-reader or an MP3 player this holiday season? If so, you'll be happy to learn that you can download e-books or e-audiobooks to your iPad, iPod, Nook, and many other devices for free through the Library.

The Library's digital collection, which is provided through a software company called Overdrive, is growing quickly as many new books are purchased in e-book and e-audiobook format. Patrons can use their library card number to check these materials out from the comfort of their own homes. They don't have to worry about returning things on time because the downloads automatically expire after a certain date.

Sound good? The first thing to do is make sure that your player -- or the one you want to buy or put on your wish list -- is compatible with the digital formats available through the Library. You can do this by viewing the list of supported devices on the Library website. Then you are ready to go to the Download Zone, which you can access through the Library's homepage. This site provides a Quick Start Guide to walk you through the entire process of downloading the Overdrive software onto your computer and then getting the Library materials onto your device. There is also a Q & A section and a catalog of e-books, e-audiobooks and even e-videos that you can browse and check out after you have downloaded the software.

If you experience any problems, the Library computer assistants and reference staff are happy to help! For assistance, call (417) 883-5341, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, or stop by your nearest branch

If you don't find what you were looking for in the Library's collection, try one of the following sites, which all provide access to free e-book and e-audiobooks.
