Tax Time
The new year has arrived and with it, tax season.
Wondering why your tax forms haven't arrived in the mail yet? Starting this year, the IRS will no longer automatically mail out income tax packages. These tax packages contained the forms, schedules and instructions for filing a paper income tax return. Don't let this change put a kink in your tax season, there are still many convenient ways to get your federal tax forms:
- All 10 branches of the Springfield-Greene County Library continue to serve as outlets for federal tax forms; visit your local Library branch to pick up commonly used forms.
- You can also find federal tax forms online.
- Or if you prefer to have forms sent via U.S. Mail, request them with this online form or by calling 1-800-829-3676.
NOTE: Some forms may not be available until late January because of the tax law changes passed by Congress in December.
The Library no longer receives any forms from the Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri tax forms are available online or can be ordered by phone, 1-800-877-6881.
Library staff aren't able to offer tax assistance. Staff members can direct you to paper copies of tax forms, internet resources, and reproducible forms and publications. The Library has also put together an extensive list of frequently asked tax questions. Included in this helpful FAQ is a schedule of free tax assistance provided by Missouri State University and Drury University students in the Springfield/Greene County area.
The Southwest Missouri Office on Aging also provides free Tax Counseling for the Elderly. They have provided a schedule for this service which is available in several cities in Greene County.
Another popular resource during tax season is J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax. Available to check-out, J.K. Lasser's is updated each year and is written by a team of tax specialists. J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax 2011 contains tax planning tips and strategies, filing tips and instructions and more.
