Food for Fines, Live Music and Computer Help All Part of a Month at the Library
Do you know people who avoid using the library because they have overdue-book fines? Are you one of them?
Then please plan to come back to the library and wipe the slate clean during Food For Fines, our fine amnesty week on January 23 through 29.
The library will subtract 50 cents from your overdue-book fine balance for each item of non-perishable food in undamaged, unexpired boxes or cans that you deliver to any branch library or the Bookmobile. The checkout desk will immediately credit your account.
There’s no limit on the amount of food you can donate, so you can pay off part or all of your overdue-book fines. (This does not apply to fines for lost, stolen or damaged items.)
All of the food will be donated to Ozarks Food Harvest to restock its shelves after the holidays, when food supplies traditionally are low.
It’s a gratifying partnership. Last year, Springfield-Greene County Library District patrons donated more than 3 tons of food during Food For Fines, enough to deliver 5,000 meals to those served by Ozarks Food Harvest.

Music lovers have two, free upcoming events sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Today (Sunday, Jan. 9), The Old Wire Road bluegrass and gospel band will perform a free concert at 2 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium.
On Sunday, Jan. 16, the Queen City Sound Chorus, the local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, will perform barbershop harmony at 2 p.m. in the Library Station Frisco Room.

How about a winter tune-up on your computer skills and your PC?
You can get both on Saturday, Jan. 15, at Staples in Springfield, during a first-time partnership between the library and Staples, 2135 E. Independence Ave.
From 10 a.m.-noon, the public can attend a free computer software class at the store taught by staff of the library’s Edge to the Rescue computer training program. We’ll supply the portable laptops.

At the same time, the public can bring in their PCs for a free tune-up by Staples technicians. To register, call Staples at 890-5538.
