Do you need help preparing your taxes? Three programs offer free assistance to individuals in Greene County.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The Community Partnership of the Ozarks coordinates with several organizations to provide the VITA program. Community volunteers and MSU and Drury students prepare free basic federal and state tax returns with electronic filing for qualified individuals. Assistance is generally for taxpayers of low-to-moderate income ($54,000 or less).
VITA clinics will operate February 1-April 14 and most require appointments. Call 417-720-2000 after January 23, 2017, for further information and to make an appointment.
Another service being offered this year is Property Tax Credit and Rent Rebate clinics. Certified volunteers will be available to help individuals file for these credits. Both the Missouri Property Tax Credit and Rent Rebate are for some senior citizens and disabled individuals for a portion of the real estate taxes or rent they have paid in 2016.
These clinics will be held the following days/times: Wednesday January 25—Library Center (South Campbell), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 4-7 p.m. and on Saturday, January 28—Library Center, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Midtown Carnegie Branch Library 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly
The SeniorAge Area Agency on Aging TCE program provides free tax preparation and assistance. IRS-certified volunteers specialize in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. They will prepare federal and state tax returns and Missouri Property Tax Credit (and rent rebate) forms. Adults 60 years of age and over will be given priority, but other ages can receive the service after older adults have been served.
TCE sites will operate February 1-April 14 and all require appointments. Contact your nearest SeniorAge Senior Center or call 417-862-0762 after January 16, 2017, for further information.
The MyFreeTaxes Partnership provides free state and federal tax preparation and filing assistance for qualified individuals (combined 2016 income under $64,000). For assistance, call 1-855-698-9435 Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; or email email@example.com.
