Normal SchoolNew Children’s Home to be Occupied Soon

Springfield Leader February, 22 1912, p.3.

"Plans were laid by the board of managers of the Children’s Home to move from the old Normal wing the first of next week into the new home in the southwest section of the city, but it is very probable the change cannot be made until late in the week, because of the weather conditions. [Note: 20 inches of snow].  Work on the interior of the new home is almost finished.  It was to have been done this week.  A considerable amount of furniture has been moved in and it will not require long to have it placed.

"Mrs. John Holland, one of the leaders in all things relating to the Children’s Home Association, said today that unless weather conditions are greatly improved the first of the week, no attempt will be made to move the children from their present quarters.
The association has maintained a home in the old Normal building since the middle of last winter.  The Children’s Home Building, formerly located in the extreme southeast portion the city, was burned to the ground on the night of December 12, 1910.  A residence on Cherry Street near Pickwick Street was first used and then the children were moved into a wing of the Normal."

[Note: According to the 1910 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map the Children's Home was located on the corner of Pickwick and Grand Avenues.  The revised Sanborn map of 1933 shows the home on Fort Street between Lombard and Grand.]
