Celebrate Women's History Month
Before the 1970s, women’s history was an overlooked topic both in the public consciousness and in American schools. In 1978, a group of educators in Sonoma, California proposed the celebration of Women’s History Week. Two years later, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week.
As more state education departments added Women’s Studies to their curricula, public interest in the subject grew. In 1987, through the efforts of the National Women’s History Project, educational groups and other women’s organizations, the United States Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month.
