A Fresh Look at a Beloved Classic

A new film production of "Jane Eyre" is creating interest in Charlotte Bronte's suspenseful masterwork.

"Jane Eyre" first appeared as a silent film in 1910. The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) lists 22 films and television mini-series of that title. The British Broadcasting Company made several versions of "Jane Eyre" from 1956 to 2006. There have also been productions in Dutch, Greek and Portuguese. The Library owns six DVD versions of "Jane Eyre."

The dark and mysterious Mr. Rochester has been portrayed by many well-known British and American actors including Toby Stephens, Ciaran Hinds, William Hurt, Timothy Dalton, George C. Scott and Orson Welles. Noted actresses such as Joan Fontaine, Samantha Morton, Susannah York and a young Anna Paquin have played Jane Eyre.

You can find the classic "Jane Eyre" here. To research "Jane Eyre" and Charlotte Bronte, look in the Library's catalog and in the research database Literature Resource Center*.

For a contemporary re-telling of the classic, try "Jane" by April Lindner, or "Jane Eyre: The Graphic Novel" adapted by Amy Corzine. If you like literary parodies, check out "Jane Slayre" by Sherri Browning Erwin.

If you've already read "Jane Eyre," you might be interested in "Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys, which is a modern interpretation of one of the secondary characters in the Bronte novel. "Wide Sargasso Sea" is the subject of a book discussion at the Library Center on July 13th at 1 p.m.
