Get Money Smart, Commemorate the Civil War During April
Save time for the Library on your April calendar so you don’t miss the 27 useful, money-management sessions and a month’s worth of shows and lectures about the American Civil War.
There’s something for every age, all month, and it’s all free.
April 2-9 is “Money Smart Week @ your library,” a series of sessions about your money – how to spend it wisely, save it, invest it, buy a home; kids and money and teens and cash.
Experts from 16 financial and consumer groups will present programs including Coupon Moms, Identity Theft Protection and Banking 101 for Teens. See a complete schedule in the Library’s Bookends catalog, or go to thelibrary.org and click on Ben Franklin’s revolving promo at top.
Money Smart Week is a national public awareness campaign to help consumers manage their finances. It’s a partnership of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the American Library Association and the library district.

April 1 kicks off the Library’s month-long commemoration of the American Civil War as the nation begins to mark the 150th anniversary.
“Voices of Conflict: The American Civil War” is the theme of the 2011 Big Read, an “Everybody, Read!” project. We chose 11 Civil War titles across all age groups for recommended reading. The list of books and a full schedule of events is at thelibrary.org/bigread, or in the Bookends catalog at any branch.
Every week through April 30, the branches will play host to lively lectures about the common soldier, cooking demonstrations, battlefield medicine, live Civil War music, African-American spirituals, living-history actors and for kids, Meet Addy: An American Girl.
Events begin at 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, at the Park Central Branch Library with the Edible Books Festival. Bakeries compete for the best-themed cake, and then we all eat cake. At 7 p.m. two Victory Mission Trade School teams compete in the Cast-Iron Cook-off, creating dishes using Civil War-era cookware.
April 2 is busy: A Civil War fashion show at 10 a.m. at the Library Station and 2 p.m. at the Midtown Carnegie Branch; “The Common Soldier” at 11 a.m. at the Fair Grove Branch, and the Campbell family memoirs from “Confederate Girlhoods: A Women’s History of Early Springfield, Missouri,” with music is at 2 p.m. at the Brentwood Branch.
