Activities Abound at The Library This Week, Month
This promises to be one busy week at The Library.
Money Smart Week @ your library continues today with Credit Basics at 2 p.m. in the Library Station, and more topics through Saturday at many branches. All ages can pick up some useful, fun, expert tips on making the most of your dollars and cents.

One of Springfield’s native sons and published authors helps kick off April’s focus on the Civil War with a visit at 7 p.m. Monday in the Library Center auditorium.
Steve Yates will visit via Skype to discuss his book “Morkan’s Quarry: A Novel.” He attended Greenwood and Glendale high schools and graduated from Missouri State University and University of Arkansas. He is assistant director/marketing director at University Press of Mississippi in Jackson.
Steve will return in person at 7 p.m. April 18 at the Brentwood Branch with authors Randall Fuller of Drury University and William Piston of Missouri State University to discuss their Civil War works.
They’re among the many quality programs for April’s Big Read theme, “Voices of Conflict: The American Civil War.” Our goal is to invite all ages to explore the lives of everyday citizens, slaves and soldiers during that tragic time.
Steve’s book certainly helps set the tone.
“The Ozarks was largely isolated hill country,” Steve explains. “A great number of people didn’t want to have anything to do with the war, wanted to be left alone to their work. I wanted to portray that risky middle ground, those real people, business owners, hard-working people caught in a maelstrom.”
“Morkan’s Quarry: A Novel” (Moon City Press) follows the owner of an Ozarks limestone quarry through the Civil War after he is coerced into giving up black powder to the Confederate Missouri State Guard.
Then at 10 a.m. on Saturday (April 9) at the Ash Grove Branch, Father Moses Berry will talk about Wallace White, the first black man in the Missouri State Cavalry; the underground railroad and his own family’s Civil War experience.
Later Saturday, children can hear “Meet Addy: An American Girl,” a slave girl during the Civil War whose family makes a daring escape to freedom. It’s at 11 a.m. in the Library Center and 2 p.m. at the Brentwood Branch.
