Get Ready for Summer Reading with the Library

If you’re a faithful summertime reader, let the library reward you. Saturday, May 21, begins the library’s annual Summer Reading Program, with incentive clubs for kids, teens and adults. Everyone, every age is eligible to register for the program at any branch library. The program runs through Aug. 6.

The children’s theme, “One World, Many Stories,” includes entertainment, library activities and programs at Springfield-Greene County Parks, Mediacom Ice Park and other places. Kids who maintain their reading logs (audiobooks count) earn a Food n’ Fun Flipcard with coupons for free treats and free or discount admission to area activities. The more they read, the more prizes they can win.

Teens in grades 6-12 can join “You Are Here,” earn a Food n’ Fun Flipcard, post book reviews online at thelibrary.org/youarehere, attend programs and win more prizes. Grand prize drawing is Aug. 8 for an iPod Nano.

Adults can read for gifts and prize drawings, too, in “Novel Destinations.” Write book reviews on Coolcat.org, the library’s online catalog, and share your thoughts and favorite reads with others. The adult program is sponsored by the Between Friends Gift Shops.

Back by popular demand, the Library Center will conduct three e-reader help sessions this month.

You will learn how to use the free OverDrive software on the library’s website thelibrary.org/overdrive to download library e-books, e-audiobooks and e-movies.

The sessions will not help owners of the Amazon Kindle. Amazon plans to make the Kindle compatible with the OverDrive software later this year.

Here are the dates of the upcoming sessions at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave. Registration is not required; bring your e-reader, laptop computer or other portable device:

Last week’s clouds pushed our Stargazing at the Library event to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, on the Library Center south lawn. Members of the Springfield Astronomical Society will guide us through the night sky with their telescopes. You’re welcome to bring your own, too. No rain date is planned.
