Smart Summer Camp

When one thinks of summer camp, often he or she will think of a place filled with tents or cabins, activities such as swimming or fishing and being surrounded by nature. While many of these type of outdoorsy camps exist in the Ozarks, there are other types of camps and programs that are ready to educate and entertain the children of the Springfield area this summer.

One option is the Arts in the Park Summer Workshops sponsored by the Springfield Regional Arts Council. This 8-week camp will allow participants to experience everything from opera and ballet to film and acting. Another program is presented by Drury University's Center for Gifted Education. Divided into appropriate age groups, DU offers Summer Pals, Summer Quest, Summerscape and Drury Leadership Academy. These programs are designed specifically for gifted students and provide valuable enrichment activities and education.

Another option is SPARC Summer Day Camps, conducted by the Springfield-Greene County Parks and Recreation. These camps include organized academic and enrichment programs tailored to the appropriate grade levels. Parents might also consider Camp Bear International which is coordinated by the English Language Institute at MSU. In addition, parents might consider the Discovery Center Summer of Science. Offering everything from robots and rocket science to dinosaurs and animation, this program has something fun and interesting for every child.

This is just a sampling of the educational and enriching camps or programs that are open to area children this summer. Several area websites list the variety of camps and programs that will be available for the summer of 2013. Click on 417mag.com and Springfieldkids.com for more information.
