Libraries Provide Drop-off Sites for Joplin Aid; Free Computer Use for Joplin-area Residents

All 10 branches of the Springfield-Greene County Library District are drop-off sites through June 6 for Care Kits for Children, a project of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks to aid children victims of the Joplin tornado.

Each branch will have a drop-off box for donations of new items including travel-size lotions and bubble solution, Play-Doh, crayons, stickers, journals or notebooks, pens, rubber balls or stress balls, small stuffed animals and fruit snacks.

The library district is also waiving the $1 computer pass fee for anyone from the Joplin or Jasper/Newton County areas who visit any of the 10 library branches. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for displaced residents or relatives to connect with family members or conduct online business.

“They may very well be staying in Springfield until they can return home,” said district Associate Director Jim Schmidt. “It’s an easy, simple gesture of sympathy.”

In addition, those residents staying temporarily in the Springfield area will also qualify for “limited address” cards, which allow them limited checkout privileges and access to other library services including reserving titles.
