Special Events All Summer at the Library
Frequent library customers know that live performances and classes are as much a part of the library as are bestsellers, children’s storytimes and free Wi-Fi. Summer is a particularly good time to bring in special guests, and we’ve got a full lineup this week.
- Today, (6/12) Lost Hill Bluegrass will provide another Sunday music concert at 2 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium. The Friends of the Library is sponsoring this afternoon of traditional bluegrass.
- On Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Station Santa Fe Room, a Master Gardener will present “The Dirt on Gardening: Pest Control in the Garden,” with tips on controlling them with minimal negative effects on the environment.
- This week award-winning storyteller and author Richard Alan Young will entertain children in preschool through fifth grade with a half hour of Native American folktales from his great-grandmother’s Seneca Indian tribe.
His schedule: 10 a.m. Monday in the upstairs meeting room of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library; 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Monday at the Republic Branch Library; 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ash Grove Elementary School; 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Library Station Frisco Room. - Author Judy Young will portray Basil B. Barnswhitten, the explorer from her award-winning book, “The Hidden Bestiary of Marvelous, Mysterious, and (Maybe Even) Magical Creatures,” and share tales of his journeys around the world in search of his favorite creatures.
Her one-hour programs for preschoolers through fifth-graders are at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Strafford Elementary School; 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fair Grove Elementary School and 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Brentwood Branch Library. - Ronald McDonald will entertain kids in a special program with puppets and games to teach them safety tips in Play It Safe this summer. His half-hour program for children in preschool through grade 5 will be at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday at the Library Center.
- SuperCharge! is the name of an energetic Springfield rock band that will perform classic, contemporary and original rock music from 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Library Station Frisco Room for kids in grades 3-6. The band includes four youths ages 12-14 that first performed in their school talent show at Field Elementary and have since recorded two demo CDs.
