Library Provides Much More Than Books
Whether you’ve lived in the area a long time, or you’re a newcomer, there are probably dozens of things you can do through the library that you didn’t know about.
Here’s a half dozen to get you started. How many of these did you know?
- If the library doesn’t have the book you are looking for, you can borrow books from other libraries. Using the COOLcat online catalog, you can search the catalogs of academic and public libraries across the country and request the items using MOBIUS. (COOL stands for Consortium of Ozarks Libraries MOBIUS stands for Missouri Online Bibliographic Information User System.
- The library lends Memory Bags designed to help caregivers work with older adults, Alzheimer’s patients or others. The bags include materials, videos, cassettes, skit scripts and game boards with exercises that help people work their memories. Topics include Remembering Farm Days, Remembering Home, Remembering Christmas, Remembering Automobiles, and more, all available by searching COOLcat at Coolcat.org.
- The website Community & Conflict: The Impact of the Civil War in the Ozarks (ozarkscivilwar.org) includes a memoir of Partheny Horn, of Linn, who wrote about several historical events and individuals like Missouri’s pro-Secession Gov. Claiborne Jackson and the Battle of Wilson’s Creek.
- You can sign up to get an email every time the library gets a new book by your favorite author. Log into your account, do a search for desired books and save it, click on Add To Favorites, click on My Account, click on Favorite Searches. Under the Mark For Email column, click on each search for which you want to receive an email alert, then click Update Favorite Searches. Each Tuesday the server sends an email to each patron if the library adds new titles to the database that correspond to a saved search.
- Library job openings and volunteer placement opportunities are always posted online at thelibrary.org, click on Library Info and then Library Jobs.
