Help Launch the New Mobile Library July 6 at Library Center

If you couldn’t tell, we’re all pretty excited about the delivery of our new Mobile Library, the district’s first new bookmobile in 20 years.

It hit the road almost immediately after it arrived June 8, serving six or seven neighborhoods and a couple of isolated communities each day – 26 stops a week. You can’t miss it – the swirling green-on-white graphic by library graphic designer Danny Dye nearly pops off the 32-foot-long vehicle.

We’re parking it long enough for a launch party to formally show it off to the community at noon on Wednesday, July 6, at the Library Center, its home port. Everyone is invited to watch the official “launch” and enjoy some cake and refreshments. Bring your library card – you may find something inside that you can’t live without.

The Friends of the Library – and members of area communities – made it all happen. The $225,000 grant that purchased the Mobile Library was funded through the Friends’ annual fall and spring book sales – funded by shoppers like you. So in more ways than one, the Mobile Library belongs to everyone.

The launch party is our chance to publicly thank the Friends as well as other sponsors, Telcomm Credit Union, St. John’s Health System, Signs Now and the Library Foundation.

The Mobile Library schedule is available online at thelibrary.org/mobilelibrary, in the Bookends catalog or by calling the Outreach Department, 883-5366, ext. 2.

Have you plugged into one of the library’s Summer Reading Program yet? The kids and teens have, while earning incentive prizes generously donated by 32 businesses, attractions, the Springfield-Greene County Parks and Recreation and others.

Halfway into the program, some 5,900 children and 1,965 teens are participating and we expect that number to grow. What’s even more impressive is that those children have logged 40,347 hours of reading and the teens have logged more than 35,908 hours of reading.
