Snavely Field

Many airplanes land on Snavely Field
Springfield Leader July 19, 1921 page 1

"Springfield is the coming center of airplane travel of this district, judging from the number of airplanes which have landed on the Snavely field the past week and a half.

"Scarcely a day passes but an army plane from Post Field, Fort Sill Okla., lands on the local field and many commercial planes stop here for supplies.  Last Sunday three planes were on the field.  Two other planes were on the field yesterday, one bound for New Jersey.  Today another plane arrived and departed for St. Louis.  Recently a plane landed here after a fast flight from New York City.

"Snavely will soon begin his summer fair flights and will be in and out of Springfield almost every day.  It is probable that the Springfield ‘smart set’ will take to airplane flights as a diversion this summer, following the fashion being set by the elite of St. Louis."

Snavely field was located south of Phelps Grove Park.  This field was later replaced by the McCluer Municipal airport on East Division Street, now known as the Downtown airport.
