E-book and Computer Training, Civil War History and Stargazing at the Library This Week
If you haven’t heard the good news, it’s finally possible for Kindle owners to download the Springfield-Greene County Libraries’ collection of e-books free from the website, thelibrary.org.
Now Kindle owners can also join other e-reader owners for the library’s ongoing series of e-reader sessions. Library staff members teach you how to download e-books from the website and provide troubleshooting tips. The sessions are free and open to the public.
The next session is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, (OCT. 5) in the Library Center’s meeting room B. More classes are scheduled through November and the winter months – just in time for holiday gift (e-reader) –giving. Check thelibrary.org/programs or see the current issue of Bookends.
Until this arrangement between Amazon and e-book distributor OverDrive, the Kindle was not compatible with OverDrive’s e-books in any public or school library.

The staff of the Edge Community Technology Center, based in the Midtown Carnegie Branch, just made it easier for adults to take beginner computer courses or take more advanced sessions at their own pace.
The Edge Mobile Classes are now offered at a library branch near you. Edge staff brings portable laptop labs to provide hands-on training in Internet basics, email, resume writing and computer software applications.
The sessions are close to home at your neighborhood branch, they’re free, and in a 1 ½- to 2-hour session, you can learn what you need.

Historian Hal Funk, whose past programs have given context to the American Civil War, returns with “Missouri: 1854-1860,” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, (OCT 4) in the Library Center auditorium. He’ll cover major events of that period including the violent Bleeding Kansas events, the state and federal elections of 1860 and South Carolina’s secession from the Union.

The weather looks good for all ages to come for Stargazing at the Library, 8:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday ,(OCT 4) at the Library Center. Members of the Springfield astronomical Society will be on the south lawn to guide us through the night sky with their telescopes. Rain date: Oct. 11.
