Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale is Oct. 18-23

It’s time for the annual Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale, and this year there are four, not three, tractor-trailer loads of items. That means more choices for shoppers all week at Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road.

The sale runs 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, through Friday, Oct. 21; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday (new Saturday hours) and 1-5 p.m. Oct. 23. On Saturday all books are half price; the sale ends Oct. 23 with Bag Day – you pay only $1 for everything you can stuff in a bag.

The sale kicks off with a members-only event, the Friends Night Preview Sale, from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17. Friends should bring their membership cards; non-members can pay a fee to get in and convert it to a new Friends membership or a renewal that night.

You can’t beat the prices. Children’s books are 50 cents or less, adult and young adult books are $1 or less, most audiovisual materials are $1, and better books are individually priced.

Many of the books are slightly used or like new, making them great holiday gifts. And a purchase at the sale helps the library district. Proceeds fund literacy and music programs, building upgrades, they bought the new Mobile Library which will be parked outside the sale on Saturday, and is funding a new delivery van.

You’ll find book categories in art, biography, children’s, cooking, gardening, history, home repair, literature, math, mystery, old books, popular fiction, reference, religion and Christian fiction, science, sports, travel, encyclopedias and westerns. This sale also features hundreds of 78 rpm, 33 rpm and 45 rpm records. The collections include many of the classics – symphonies, musicals and old-time favorites.

Friends of the Library make it all happen, working months to collect donated items weekly from the libraries, sorting, pricing, setting up and working the sale. This year they have help – Two Men and a Truck is donating delivery of  supplies and tables, said sale chairperson Pat Myers.

Volunteers don’t take donations at the sale, but you can still drop them off at any branch library during business hours – because they’ll soon start getting ready for the Friends annual Spring Book Sale, April 24-29, 2012.
