Record Breaking Bag Day at Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale

The Friends of the Library faced some stiff competition for attention during the World Series games last week, but the group still had a successful Fall Book Sale Oct. 18-23.

Thanks to everyone who dropped by to shop, the Friends had $99,349 in sales during the week-long event. The final day of the sale, Bag Day, racked up $9,053.97 in sales – a record amount for the traditional four-hour scramble. That’s when shoppers pay only $1 (or $5 in the “better books” section) for all the items they can squeeze in a sack.

Among the great “finds” of the week were copies of books signed by authors such as Johnny Cash, John Grisham and others. You didn’t get one of those collectors’ items? You’ll just have to make plans to arrive early at the Friends Spring Book Sale on April 24-29, 2012.

Want to help next time? You can always become a Friends member by asking a librarian for an application, or go to http://thelibrary.org/donate/friends.cfm. Proceeds from the Friends two yearly book sales support many library projects that serve all ages in the community, including the recent purchase of the new Mobile Library and a library delivery van.

You can also donate items for the next sale, since the Friends volunteers and sale chairwoman Pat Myers are already preparing for the spring sale. Staff at any of the 10 branch libraries will accept boxed and bagged donations of books, CDs, DVDs, VHS movies, audiobooks, textbooks and more for all ages. Feel free to call ahead to a branch near you and a librarian will arrange to meet you at the door. Friends volunteers can also arrange to pick up large loads for those who need help.
