Go Green with the Library

The Library invites you to go green with us.

On any given day, 17,000 library patrons have "holds" placed on books or other materials ready for pickup. About 6,000 of them are notified about their holds by mail or by telephone – a step that takes time and a good deal of paper.

Through November, and in honor of National Recycling Day on Tuesday, we’re encouraging patrons who haven't already done so to sign up for email notifications of their holds and "overdue" reminders.

Not only is it "green," but email notices are also the most reliable and fastest method to receive library alerts.

It’s easy. Just give your email address to a librarian at the checkout desk, or log on to your account at thelibrary.org/myaccount to add or update your email address.

To kick off our campaign, everyone is invited to a Shredding Event by Edco Group, Inc. from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday on the parking lot of the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave.

Patrons can deposit documents that they want securely destroyed into the Edco locked bin. The bin will be taken to Edco’s main shredder at its Springfield headquarters for shredding.

The Library has also posted an article under Community Matters on thelibrary.org home page describing other ways the Library recycles, and noting recycling drop-off sites around the community.

The next e-reader training session for adults who are new to downloading e-books and other things on their e-readers is at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the community room of the Brentwood Branch Library, 2214 Brentwood Blvd. Don’t be shy – the sessions have been popular for e-reader owners who want some troubleshooting tips, or who just want help learning how to download free e-books from the library’s site.

Looking for a gift idea for a friend or family member who lives outside of Greene County but travels here often? Give them an out-of-county library card to the Springfield-Greene County Library District. We provide the gift card.

The $50 fee for one year entitles an entire family living in the same residence to have checkout privileges and use of online databases and research tools – so they can access the library from home. Ask for information at the checkout desk of any branch library.
