Check Out Voting Matters to Stay Informed
Voting matters, and that’s why the Library will soon be kicking off a new series on the Library website devoted to providing you with information to be better informed about the 2012 political season.
It will be called, appropriately, "Voting Matters," and each installment written by Library staff will include condensed facts about ballot issues, pros and cons and links to resources or recommended news stories for more details. The articles will appear on the left-hand side of the Library home page, thelibrary.org. You’ll also be able to link to previous ones.
The first in the series will focus on the Springfield E-Verify measure on the Feb. 7 ballot. The measure would require employers under the broad heading of "business entities" to use E-Verify to determine the eligibility of their employees to work. Under an existing federal E-Verify law, it is already mandatory for employers with federal contracts or subcontracts that contain the Federal Acquisition Regulation E-Verify clause.
Librarians are revered as information experts. We think Voting Matters will be a reliable source for information you seek, from people you can trust.

Have some pesky overdue fines hanging over your head? The Library is making it easy for you to clean the slate beginning Jan. 22 with the return of our "fine amnesty" week, Food For Fines.
Now through Saturday, Jan. 28, the Library will knock 50 cents off your overdue-fines balance for each item of non-perishable food you bring in to any library branch or the Mobile Library during business hours. There’s no limit, so bring in as much as you wish. Biggest needs: canned meats, canned and boxed meals, peanut butter, canned fruit, cereal and hygiene items. Please no beverages in plastic or glass containers.
The food goes to Ozarks Food Harvest, the region’s only food bank, which distributes 12 million lbs. of food annually to agencies serving poverty-stricken children, working poor, families and seniors in 28 southwest Missouri counties.

There are two more sessions this week on how to download library books free onto your e-reader: 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, in the Library Station Frisco Room, and 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Midtown Carnegie Branch upstairs meeting room.
