Photo Archive Reveals Faces and Places of the Civil War
Civil War images of faces and places in the Ozarks and other sites west of the Mississippi will be featured during a program at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, in the auditorium of the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave. The program is free and open to all ages.
The program will include:
- period music by the Holmes Brigade,
- a demonstration of the new Civil War online collection, “The Trans-Mississippi Theater Photo Archive,”
- a program on Civil War photography by Kip Lindberg, director of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps Museum at Fort Leonard Wood.
The Photo Archive hosts hundreds of images from the Civil War online at ozarkscivilwar.org/photographs. It captures images of the men, women and children who witnessed the war; Civil War ports, ships and sailors; battlefields, towns, buildings and landscapes, period sketches and engravings; and post-war reunion photos of Confederate and Union armies.
The Photo Archive is a joint project by the Springfield-Greene County Library District and Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. It is made possible through a Challenge Cost Share Grant funded by the National Park Service.
The American Civil War was the first war to be fully captured through photography. Few photographs survive from previous conflicts, but during the mid-19th century new techniques and processes made photography much more accessible. The Civil War provided an unprecedented opportunity for American photographers to document the one of the most important events in American history.
