Find Low-cost, Used Books at Library Gift Shops

The occasional mild, winter days remind us of spring, and that reminds us of the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale. Yes, it’s coming: April 24-29 at Remington’s.

You can’t wait that long for quality, like-new, bargain-priced books?  You don’t have to.

The Friends of the Library also stock a large selection of books for all ages in the Between Friends Gift Shops at the Library Center and Library Station. You always have a selection of books at the same low prices that you enjoy at the Friends bi-annual sales.

Throughout the year, Friends members select and stock popular hardbacks, paperbacks and music CDs from the items that patrons donate for the big sales, or that the Library weeds from its collection.

Like the Friends fall and spring book sales, the gift shops’ used book benefit everyone who uses the Library services. The Friends recently reported that the two shops took in $12,146 from the sale of 4,849 books and CDs between July and December 2011.

For now, $6,000 of that will help purchase more e-books, e-audiobooks and other downloadables – a segment of the Library collection in ever-growing demand.

And speaking of which – three more e-reader sessions are coming up: 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at the Brentwood Branch; 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Strafford Branch and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Library Center.

If you’re a fan of classical music, you may also know of Randy Stewart, fine arts producer for Ozarks Public Radio station KSMU. In a rare treat, the Library Center is bringing the two together, live, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2,  in the auditorium.

Randy will emcee this special evening of classical music with a new string quartet, Amore Strings. We invite you to take advantage of this chance to experience classical music in a small venue.

Save the date: Feb. 6. The Library is pleased to partner with others on “Tales of Wonder,” a celebration of African and African-American folktales with local storytellers.
It’s planned from 7-8:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the Diversity Center on the campus of Drury University, 803 N. Drury Lane. The program is part of Springfield’s annual African American Read-In Chain.
