A year in Graphic Novels: 2011

2011 might well have been called the year of "something for everyone" - in regards to comics and graphic novels.  It was the feverish anticipation of a new graphic novel from Craig Thompson - author of Blankets - coupled with new zombie installments of The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman.  We saw beautifully drawn protagonists navigate a post-plague world, thwart mythical monsters and fall in love with vampires.

We saw the bittersweet coming of age memoir of Marzena Sowa set in Communist-era Poland.  Again the true crime genre paired with graphic novel form in The Green River Killer. And last but certainly not least, Paul Hormschemeier's Life with Mr. Dangerous reminds us of our own stuck-in-neutral phases of life.  His central character Amy offered the image of true vulnerability while clinging to a television show to regain her perspective.
