Join the Big Read at the Library; Enter Drawing for "Shrek The Musical" Tickets

We promised a Big Read this year, and it’s big. The Library has a film, lecture, author visit, game night, book discussion or something fun planned for kids, teens or adults on 24 of the 30 days in April.

The Big Read is our annual month-long celebration of the joy of reading for pleasure. We encourage everyone to read the same book in April, making it our “one book, one community” event.

This year’s selected title is “The Maltese Falcon,” the 1930 private-eye classic. Many hear the title and see a swarthy Humphrey Bogart as Detective Sam Spade in the popular film.

Not only is it one of the best detective novels ever written, but it lends itself to a wide variety of programs ranging from 30s music to mystery author visits to lectures about how real detectives solve crimes.

The Library bought extra copies of the book for you to check out, and we placed some paperback copies around city and county sites for you to take, read, and pass along to someone else.

We’re getting an early start on the Big Read when Chef HJ Schumer from Price Cutter’s Taste Culinary Classroom returns at 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, at the Library Center for “Travels with the Falcon.” The chef will demonstrate – and we’ll eat – samples of international dishes based on “The Maltese Falcon.”

Save the date: April 6, at Park Central Branch. The wildly popular Iron Chef Cook-off and Edible Books Festival return at 6 and 7 p.m. In keeping with the book theme, teams from Victory Mission Trade School will compete to make the best San Francisco cuisine (setting of the book), and bakers will compete to decorate the best Maltese Falcon-themed cake. Then everyone gets a sample.

You can find a complete list of Big Read programs for all ages in Bookends or online at thelibrary.org/bigread.

Friday, March 30, is the first day you can enter a drawing at any library branch to win tickets to see “Shrek The Musical,” which runs April 27-29 at Juanita K. Hammons Hall. One winner from each branch will receive four tickets for opening night, and one of the winning names drawn will receive VIP seating and meet Shrek backstage. You’ll find details at the Library.
