Busy Spring and Summer Planned at the Library

April marks the beginning of one of the busiest periods at the Library, when we offer a full schedule of programs for all ages during the Big Read all month, Money Smart Week April 21-28, and begin gearing up for the jam-packed summer reading programs for kids, teens and adults. It’s non-stop between now and fall, and we hope you’ll join us.

In the middle of it all, April 24-29, is the big Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale.

The Friends volunteers are filling the fourth tractor-trailer now, and the book, CD, DVD, records and game donations keep coming. Friends preview night is April 23, so if you’re not a member of the Friends, now is a good time to join so you can take advantage of all the great preview-night selections.

We haven’t forgotten that it’s a busy fall for political campaigns, too. If you or someone you know needs to register to vote, you can do that at any branch library and the Mobile Library. For details on the documents you need before registering, go to thelibrary.org/vote, or ask a librarian.

The usual second Sunday concert at the Library Center was moved this month only to 2 p.m. on April 1 to help kick off the 2012 Big Read celebration. In keeping with the echoes of the selected Big Read title, the 1930 detective classic, “The Maltese Falcon,” the concert features Little Hoover’s Big Band Celebrates National Jazz Month.” The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The Big Read biggie is the Iron Chef Cook-off and Edible Books Festival at 6 and 7 p.m. on Friday, April 6, at the Park Central Branch Library. It’s not your typical library program. First, two teams from Victory Trade School will compete in whipping up cuisine from San Francisco, the setting of “The Maltese Falcon.” Everyone gets to sample the results.

Through the night, everyone votes for the cake best decorated in the theme of “The Maltese Falcon.” Competing this year is last year’s winner, Stacey’s Sweets, along with June’s Cakery, Amy Cakes and Style By the Slice.” After the winner is chosen, everyone eats cake.

There are several other Big Read events this week. You’ll find details in Bookends at any branch or at thelibrary.org, under Programs.
