Attend Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale April 24-29
The Ozarks’ biggest used book sale and “recycling” project gets under way this week at Remington’s in Springfield.
It’s the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale, which features thousands of used books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, cassette tapes and LP records for all ages. It returns this year to fill the cavernous Remington’s facility at 1655 W. Republic Road.
All items were donated by avid readers or weeded from the library’s collection over the past year, so many are on their second and third recycled life.
Monday, 5-8 p.m., is the Friends Night Preview Sale. You can get first crack at the sale if you’re a Friends member (bring your membership card), or you can pay $5 at the door and apply that to a Friends membership that night.
The official sale runs 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Half-price Day ; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Bag Day. Stuff everything you can into a bag for $1 or $5.
Don’t wait until the end of the sale to get your bargains. All week, children’s books are 50 cents or less; adult, young adult books and most audiovisual items are $1 or less and better books are $2 and higher.
New or unique this year, says sale Chairwoman Pat Myers: a section of autographed copies including one signed by Virginia Woolf; a large selection on Russia and Russian history donated this year by a collector; and just in time for Queen Elizabeth’s diamond jubilee, a collection of books on the Royal Family.
You’ll also find: car and home repair manuals, crafts how-tos and woodworking – “That stuff never goes out of style,” Myers said. “Cookbooks still are one of our biggest sections along with gardening, especially this time of year,” she added. There’s also a big selection of educational materials, perfect for home-school teachers.
New categories include Native American Indians, fashion/beauty, jewelry and jewelry making, and math and science.
As always, proceeds from the sale benefit the 10 branches and the Mobile Library of the Springfield-Greene County Library District.
If you need any help or have any questions while you’re at the sale, just ask one of the volunteers in the blue aprons.
“Come and shop,” Myers said. “We’re open for business and excited about the sale.”
