Concert, Stargazing, Movies Highlight Adult Summer Reading Program Events
As the Summer Reading Program for all ages gets under way on May 19, the Library has planned a variety of programs to delight and entertain adults while they’re reading through the summer.
Catch a free flick, volunteer an hour to make no-sew blankets for a child, take a tour of the night sky at a local observatory, or rock to the acoustic sounds of Mark Bilyeu in a concert under the stars. Under the Stars at Baker Observatory
8:30 p.m. Friday, June 22
Join us for a close-up view of our night sky during Library night at Baker Observatory, 12 miles north of Marshfield. We’ll look at the setting crescent moon, constellations, planets and deep-sky objects. Becky Baker, Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science, Missouri State University, and students will be on hand to answer questions. Reservations recommended, call 865-1340. If it’s overcast or rainy, the program will be at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium. If you’re unsure, call 865-1340.
Singer, Guitarist, Songwriter Mark Bilyeu Concert on the Patio
7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 23, on the Library Center patio (or inside if it rains). Formerly of Big Smith, Bilyeu returns to the Library Center for a special outdoor concert. The event is free and open to all ages. Come early for a snack from the Mudhouse and good seating, or bring your lawn chair. In 2005 Bilyeu released a solo CD, a country-folk-rock collection called “First One Free.” He studied music at Missouri State University. He and his wife own and operate MayApple Records.
The Library Has Kids Covered With Project Linus
10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Library Center, Meeting Rooms A&B, and at the
Library Station, Frisco Room.
Provide love, security and warmth to a local child in need by making an easy, no-sew blanket for them. Project Linus blanketeers will be on hand for demonstrations and questions. Supplies not provided, please bring: 1.5 yards of child-friendly or solid fleece and scissors. Donations of new, handmade blankets or canned food also accepted.

Transit of Venus Star Party
Tuesday, June 5, 5-10 p.m. on the patio. Watch the last transit of Venus between Earth and the sun to occur in your lifetime. View it through solar scopes and stick around after sunset for telescope viewing of the moon, stars and other planets. Sign up at the event for a chance to win a beginner telescope. Sponsored by Southwest Missouri Planetarium and Springfield Astronomical Society.
Movies That Will Keep You Up at Night: Hitchcock Thrillers
