Big Band Cavalcade, Stry.us and Project Linus Events Offer Opportunities for Fun and Community

Big Band fans cross all generations, but many of us know only the music. Joe Costantino lived it during his career in radio and television, when he worked with some of the industry’s greatest entertainers.

Joe will share the legends, video, music and first-hand accounts of the Big Band era during his popular series beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, in the Library Center Story Hour Room. The series continues July 23, 30 and Aug. 6.

Among others, he worked with Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Earl Hines and Woody Herman. Joe will talk about those band leaders, arrangers and singers who began their careers as vocalists for big bands.

On Tuesday, the public is invited to attend a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium. A panel of Springfield professionals will address questions posed by concerned citizens via a recent “Letters to Springfield” campaign coordinated by Stry.us and the Springfield-Greene County Library District.

Stry.us is a news organization whose reporters have been writing stories from Springfield this summer about big issues, ideas and people, while trying to start a larger conversation about how all of it affects our communities. Their stories are posted on

http://Stry.us

.

Through the project, Stry.us has been asking citizens: What do you want your city to know? People have been sending letters with their stories, questions and concerns through the stry.us/letters

and via drop boxes at public sites.

Tuesday’s panelists will represent the City of Springfield, Missouri State University Sociology Department, UMB Bank, United Way and the Library District.
The panel will also be live-streamed on the City of Springfield’s website, springfieldmo.gov, and available for viewing afterward on stry.us. For details go to http://stry.us.
