Livin' the Nerd Life: Free E-books from Project Gutenberg

Okay, so we might stick little white labels on everything and obsessively shelve it, but we're cool sometimes, too. We promise. Just not here. The Livin' the Nerd Life series is where we nerd out about our super-cool discoveries. Nerdy, but awesome.

The Library offers a ton of great e-books to check out for a two week time period. We offer everything from romance to mystery to classic literature. You can check out the many titles we offer at overdrive.thelibrary.org.

Sometimes, however, that great title you can't wait to read is unavailable. If it's a classic, you can probably download for free (and legally!) from Project Gutenberg. The site offers over 40,000 titles -- all for free. Some similar sites also offer free e-books, but their quality may be questionable. According to Project Gutenberg, all of their e-books are already published books, and have been digitized by volunteers. The really great thing about this site is some of the classics that are free on Project Gutenberg are not free on Amazon.

I had a blast browsing through the collection, and downloaded several books: "Dubliners", James Joyce; "The Count of Monte Cristo", Alexandre Dumas; and "Siddhartha", Hermann Hesse (none of which I could find free on Amazon).
