Language Education, Music Industry Knowledge and Meeting Room Space All Available From Your Library

The Library applauds the collaboration of five area colleges, which this week announced plans to create a Foreign Language Institute on Missouri State University property.

The frequent requests for library language materials tells us that English speakers – from students to business travelers -- are eager to talk to the rest of the world, and non-native English speakers want to perfect their skills.

As the institute takes shape, we like to remind people of all ages and skill levels that with just a library card they can go online 24 hours a day, alone or with a group, and learn any of more than 35 foreign languages.

Mango Languages is an interactive, online language learning system that the Library subscribes to and offers free to library cardholders. You can access it through thelibrary.org/mango*, on just about any device.

Mango focuses on practical speaking skills for real-life situations and actual conversations. The selling point: You’ll learn more than vocabulary, you’ll learn how to communicate. It’s practical for all ages of students, tourists, business travelers and newcomers.

Teens in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to spend an evening talking with indie rock musician Philip Dickey of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Dragon Inn III. Dickey will talk about the ins and outs of starting a band, touring, record deals and getting your music licensed.

He’ll be in the Library Station’s Frisco Room at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, and at the Library Center from 9-10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. (Library Center participants may not leave before 10:30 p.m. unless a parent or guardian picks them up.)

Many clubs and business organizations that take the summer off are gearing back up with regular meetings. If your group or company needs a comfortable space for meetings or training sessions, consider booking a room at one of the library branches.

Meeting space is always free, and there are a variety of sizes of rooms. The largest is the Library Center auditorium, capacity 150; the smallest conference rooms are comfortable for four to six people. Most branches also have equipment including TV with DVD/VCR capabilities and laptop projectors.

Find out more by calling any library branch, or go to thelibrary.org and click on “hours & locations.” Each branch listing provides meeting room details.
