Discovery Center Passes Available for Checkout; Authors' Fair Oct. 6 at Library Center
If you or your family haven’t had a chance to visit the Discovery Center of Springfield lately, or ever, now’s your chance. And it will only cost the price of checking out a library book – nothing.
The Library used a grant to buy 20 Discovery Center family passes that we want to share with Springfield-area families.
Beginning Monday, a family of four can check out one of the family passes at any library branch and use it for seven days for free. All you need is a valid library card.
After seven days, the pass expires so someone else can use it. Just look for the Discovery Center display at any of the 10 branches of the library district.
Each pass admits up to four people (at least one adult and no more than three children age 3 and older. Children age 2 and under are always admitted free). The passes are for general admission only; no special events or member discounts.
The museum passes, available for a full year, are among several Library projects funded through a $7,000 grant from the Missouri Parent Information Resource Center, U.S. Department of Education, Office of Improvement and Innovation.
Other cities’ libraries have similar programs with their educational attractions, said Youth Services Coordinator Nancee Dahms-Stinson. This Library/Discovery Center partnership is yet another way to help parents provide quality educational experiences for their children.
“We take hard science and bring it to an experience level that somebody with no science background could still interact with,” while anyone with a rich background can enjoy it, too, said Discovery Center Education Director Laurie Duncan. “There are multiple entry points for people of all ages to explore, experience and have success, and have those ‘Ah HA!’ moments of learning and have fun at the same time. We kind of call it ‘stealth learning.’”

Like to meet writers? Thirty published authors from across the Ozarks will sell their books and visit one-on-one about the writing life during the Authors’ Fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Library Center.
The featured authors represent a range of genres, from history to memoir; travel, fantasy, romance, science, children’s, mystery and more. The event is free and open to all ages.
