Record a Loved One's Story on National Day of Listening

Getting together with family for the Thanksgiving holiday? The producers of the popular StoryCorps series, heard on Ozarks Public Radio KSMU 91.1, invite you to join StoryCorps’ National Day of Listening, Nov. 23.

On that day, they are encouraging family members to record an interview with a loved one to capture a favorite memory or family story – just as StoryCorps does in recording the lives and stories of everyday Americans.

The Springfield-Greene County Library, Drury University’s Convocation series, “Voices Unbound,” and KSMU  want to help families capture those stories.

• First, learn how: KSMU staff will present sessions on how to conduct keepsake interviews and provide examples from StoryCorps. Sessions are 11 a.m.-noon Nov. 8 in Drury University’s Lay Hall with KSMU’s Michele Skalicky, or 1-2 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Library Center’s Story Hour Room with KSMU’s Jennifer Moore Davidson.

• Second, record a story: On the Day of Listening, Nov. 23, record your stories at home. Or, let the Library help. Reserve a time from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Library Center and staff will provide recording equipment and space in the Harrison Room and other meeting rooms.

Reservations are required; call 882-0714. Participants should bring their own flash drives to download the recording, or purchase one at the Library Center Reference Desk for $7.

The recordings are for personal use and will not be aired on NPR. However, participants may upload their interviews to StoryCorps' National Day of Listening page.

For more information or details, call Community Relations at 616-0564 or 616-0566.
