Stumped for Ideas? Let the Library Entertain Your Holiday Guests
If you’re entertaining out-of-town guests over the holidays, you may run out of things to do, but we won’t. Bring your guests to a free library program. (But note: All library branches and Mobile Library will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We’ll reopen on Wednesday.)
Catch a Time Warp Double Feature for all ages from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday in the Library Center auditorium. We’re featuring blasts from the past like “Labyrinth,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Ghostbusters” on our big screen. Check listings at thelibrary.org/programs. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the Park Central Branch will show “Batman” for adults.
All ages are invited to drop in for brain teasers and other fun in the I Spy Celebration at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Library Center. Also Thursday, grades K-4 can Build It with Gingerbread at 10:30 a.m. at the Republic Branch Library. Materials are provided.
On Friday, teen games and crafts are on tap at 6 p.m. Friday at the Library Station Santa Fe Room. From 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, the Library Center will have more brain teasers during DK Eyewitness Celebration for all ages.

If you want a good book to read over the holidays but don’t know what to choose, check out NoveList. The online resource provides book suggestions for fiction lovers. Visit thelibrary.org/books and thelibrary.org/databases.
NoveList offers an easy-to-use site to explore books, series, authors and genres. You can read book reviews from reliable sources, or see recommended grade levels or discover book characteristics such as plot-driven, issue-oriented, darkly humorous, etc.

Change is challenging, even if you’re a kid. So librarians were eager to hear reactions from Children’s Departments, where we replaced some of the spine-out shelves with low book bins that display children’s books face-out.
We’ve noticed that kids are more likely to grab a book when they are enticed by a lively cover, but the jury was still out until we heard from an expert – a 4-year-old who inspected the new bins at the Library Center last week.
When asked what she thought of the new look, she said, “It’s good because little kids like my sister can reach the top of the books.”
Sounds like we passed the test.
