Hold Canceled Notice Doesn't Mean You're Out of Options

We’re in the business of getting books and more into people’s hands. You need it? We can try to get it. Sounds simple, but it’s not always, as some patrons have noticed.

This is what’s behind those “Hold Canceled” notices you may receive, telling you “…Your request for the following item has been canceled. There is either a problem with this item or the Library no longer owns it…”

Scenario one: If the Library doesn’t have a book you want and it’s not available to check out from any other institution through interlibrary loan, you can ask us to buy it for the collection and place your name on the list to check it out.

On occasion, however, our suppliers can’t obtain it.

Scenario two: If the book is listed in coolcat.org as being in our collection but it’s not on our shelves, you can put a “hold” on it in person or via coolcat.org and we’ll notify you when the book is back and waiting for you.

On occasion, however, the last person with that book never returns it, and we haven’t or are unable to re-order it.

The Library monitors those “holds” lists and purges them after several months when it’s obvious the book is missing or the supplier canceled the order for some reason.
That’s when the Library sends you a Hold Canceled notice.

You still have options: You can call us to re-request the item, or you can ask us to borrow the item from another institution through Interlibrary Loan – in person or via coolcat.org. We mean what we add on the Hold Canceled notice: We apologize for any inconvenience.
