Healthy Heart Resources

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that more than 600,000 people die of heart disease every year in the United Sates.  This accounts for one in four of all deaths, second only to cancer as the most common cause of deaths in the United States.  The month of February has been designated "American Heart Month", which focuses on raising awareness for heart disease and promoting healthy heart habits.  The following is a list of helpful resources with information on keeping your heart healthy.

The American Heart Association is a good place to start looking for heart-related information.  They have a wide variety of resources, covering things like heart-healthy cooking, exercises, weight management, smoking cessation and many more healthy living topics.  They also have information covering specific conditions, explaining risk factors, prevention and treatment options.  You can also find heart disease and stroke related statistics, as well as information on current research.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is a good place to find information about topics such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, congenital heart conditions and related topics.  They also have a wide variety of diet and exercise information.  This is another excellent place to look for current statistics and research on heart disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a website devoted to heart disease.  The website focuses on general information, risk factors and prevention.

The Library also has many books focused on heart health, diet and exercise.  The following books may be of interest:
