"Out of This World" Fantasy and Science Fiction Book Discussion Group Begins At The Library Center
The popularity of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien in the 1960s created the modern fantasy genre, but the arrival of a certain boy wizard in 1997 kicked the door open to mainstream acceptance. Though the "Harry Potter" series was written for children, adults around the world found the books just as absorbing. "The Lord of the Rings" films brought millions of new readers to the fantasy fold. The "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" series did the same thing for science fiction. Suddenly it was cool to be a geek who reads fantasy and science fiction.
The Library Center is hosting the "Out of This World Book Group" on the second Thursday night of each month through May. We will be discussing fantasy and science fiction titles, new and classic. Bring your own ideas for future title suggestions for these discussions. If you attend the February or March discussions, you will also receive a free fantasy mini-poster and bookmark.

"American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. Hugo and Nebula award winner. At various turns hilarious, erudite and disturbing, this novel is by one of the strongest voices in modern fantasy. Shadow is a man with a past and wants nothing more now than to live a quiet life with his wife. When his wife is killed in a terrible accident, Shadow flies home for the funeral. As a raging storm rocks the plane, the strange man in the seat next to Shadow introduces himself as Mr. Wednesday. He knows more about Shadow than is possible, and he warns Shadow an even bigger storm is coming.

"Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card
