Enjoy "After-Hours" Concert with Mid-America Singers Feb. 24 at Library Center
You’re invited to take a seat at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 inside the Library Center’s concourse for a rare treat – an “after-hours” concert by the Springfield Mid-America Singers.
It’s a benefit concert for the Brentwood Branch Library renovation project. The Library Foundation will lead a campaign later this year to fund the project.
The concert is free; donations will be accepted for the project. Reservations are not required, and all ages are welcome.
The Library Center closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays. We’ll reopen it at 5:30 p.m. that night for the 6:30-8 p.m. event. Seating will be throughout the concourse – the library’s expansive entry hall.
You’ll enjoy vocal selections and readings during “American Tapestry in Song and Verse,” directed by Tom Matrone and accompanied by Darlene Matrone. They’ll feature songs by favorite American composers that pay homage to Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson and others. Mixed in will be readings by Springfield teacher and actor Mark Gideon, featuring poetry and passages from literature written during the same period.
The Springfield Mid-America Singers have loyal followers. If you haven’t heard them yet, the Feb. 24 concert is a perfect time to get comfortable in the concourse and enjoy their sound.

The Ozarks Literacy Council is settled in its new offices on the lower level of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library after moving in Dec. 1. Executive Director Kathy Pinkley is eager to show visitors the new home at an open house and tour from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20. Refreshments will be provided by Big Momma’s Coffee & Espresso Bar.

Do you remember the Medal of the Month Club? Felicity Buranelli started the club in 1941 to celebrate heroes of aviation and inspire America’s youth. The tenth and final medal was issued in 1972. Coin enthusiast and author Harry Waterson compiled a catalog of the medals and their histories, which he’ll talk about at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Library Center’s meeting room B.

A reminder: All library branches will be closed on Monday and the Mobile Library will not operate in honor of Presidents’ Day. You may still return items to library book drops and the Price Cutter Plus Book Stop at 3260 E. Battlefield Road.
