Mid-America Singers Will Fill Library Center with Sound of Music

Fans of the Library Center’s Sunday Concert Series and those new to the idea of concerts in a library will enjoy an after-hours event from 6:30-8 p.m. today. Feb. 24, by the Springfield Mid-America Singers.

The Library Center will close at 5 p.m. as usual for Sundays, and will reopen at 5:30 p.m. for concert seating. It’s unusual in another respect. We’ve never had a concert in the concourse before – that’s the 114-foot-long hallway leading into the library.

If last Sunday’s rehearsal with the singers is any indication, the sound of their voices through the concourse will give you chills.

We’re calling the event “American Tapestry in Song and Verse.” Under the direction of Thomas Matrone, the group will perform compositions based writings of Robert Frost, Emily Dickenson, Octavio Paz and others; and conclude with two rousing American spirituals.

The concert is free and all ages are welcome. Donations will be accepted. This is a benefit concert to help raise awareness and funds for the Brentwood Branch Library renovation project. The Library Foundation, sponsoring the event, will lead a capital campaign for the project.

Chef HJ Schumer from Price Cutter’s Taste Culinary Classroom returns Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium. In Warm Food for a Wintry Day, Chef Schumer will conduct another cooking lesson – with samples – to show how to enjoy comfort food and still eat healthfully. It’s a good idea to register by calling 882-0714.

Have you seen “Beautiful Creatures,” the major motion picture showing in Springfield? Co-author of that book series, Margaret Stohl, is coming to Springfield April 30 for a free, public event for all ages. Her visit, part of the Library’s 2013 Big Read, will be at 7 p.m. at the Springfield Art Museum.  Author Avi will visit at 7 p.m. April 2 at Pythian Castle. We’ll have more about both visits soon.

And because we love authors … Many of you enjoyed stories and laughs with author Ridley Pearson during the Library’s April 2012 Big Read. While it’s not a Library-sponsored event, he’s returning at 6 p.m. March 2 at the Tower Club to accept the Quill Award from the Writers Hall of Fame. Send an email for details.
