Big Read Features Visit from Avi and New Responsive Website
Kids and young adults, their parents and teachers are likely familiar with the award-winning works of Avi, who has written more than 70 books for children and young adults. His popular titles include the Newbery Award-winning “Crispin: The Cross of Lead,” “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” and “The Seer of Shadows.”
Everyone will get a chance to see Avi (he uses one name) in person at 7 p.m. on April 2 at Pythian Castle, 1451 E. Pythian St., Springfield, as part of the Library’s 2013 April Big Read celebration. The month’s book discussions and special events will be devoted to the tales and poems of Edgar Allan Poe, so Avi’s talk about his own writing life, “A Haunted Writer,” is, as we say, “a-Poe-priate.”
Avi’s visit is open to the public and admission is free, but seating is limited so you need a ticket to get in. You can pick up your free tickets beginning Monday, MARCH 11, at any Library branch. If you use a mobile device to visit thelibrary.org, the Library’s information-packed website, you’re among a growing group of people.
Thirteen percent of U.S. people age 16 and older have used a mobile device to visit a library website or access other library services, according to a national survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. This percentage has more than doubled since 2009, according to the report.
Those most likely to have connected to a library website using a mobile device: Parents of young children, 19 percent; women, 16 percent; and college graduates, 21 percent.
If you’re one of them, you can take advantage of the Library’s newest website feature on thelibrary.org/bigread. This is our first “responsive” website, says Web Manager Nancy Eike. “Responsive means that this is a single website that intelligently adjusts its layout and features based on what device is accessing it, whether that is a PC, tablet, phone, automobile dashboard, refrigerator, etc…This is the direction we will be taking with all of our websites in the future.”
