Library Needs Help with Disney DVDs; Town Hall Meetings with Legislators Scheduled; Attend Nocturnal Animals Puppet Show

The Library rarely asks for donations of books, DVDs or other materials for the collection we check out to the public. We have a budget to buy those materials, thanks to Greene County property tax payers.

This is one of those rare times. We need Disney DVDs in top condition.

The library’s Walt Disney DVDs are wildly popular items that check out a lot. Over time, they wear out or get damaged and we have to weed out and replace them. But unlike with most items, we can’t buy replacements whenever we need them, says Library Collection Services Manager Lisa Sampley.

Disney periodically releases a limited number of a popular title, and then returns it to the vault. We do our best to buy up copies when they’re available, but we usually need replacements sooner than Disney releases the next batch. That means at times we’re left with worn copies of Disney DVDs to check out.

Copies may be available on mail-order sites but usually at an inflated – or “collectible” price. And the Library must use copyright versions – no transfers from VHS tapes.

So here’s the rare request: If you have a few Disney DVDs in your home collection that the family no longer watches or wants, the Library would welcome your donated, top-condition copies. Just drop them off at any Library branch with a note, “Attention Collection Services.” The Library, kids and families will thank you.

Your legislators are on Spring Break, and several will be at libraries this week for town hall meetings to discuss what’s on your mind. They’re also interested in discussing the state budget, which programs may stay and which may go due to funding shortages, said Rep. Jeff Messenger.

The meetings are 1-3 p.m. Monday, March 18, at the Brentwood Branch Library; 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Library Station; 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Library Center; and 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Republic Branch Library.

All ages are invited to a Library program at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center at 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22. It’s the Nocturnal Animals Puppet Show. The night is filled with strange sounds and sights, and we’ll explore the animals behind all that ruckus. Questions? Call 888-4237.
